The Little Guide Summer Edit: Local Gems, Island Escapes & What’s New at DAVID JAMES
Eat Here: The Brazen Head, SF, Ca (Cow Hollow)
One of San Francisco's most beloved late-night gems, a true neighborhood mainstay that brings together locals and travelers for classic comfort food, strong drinks, and a welcoming, family-run vibe. Posting a photo without showing its classic dim red lighting would be like showing a black and white photo of the Golden Gate Bridge - it’s just not right… Here’s why this Cow Hollow hideaway deserves a spot on your must-visit list—and why it’s my personal go-to for a cozy, memorable night out.
Tucked away on Buchanan Street, The Brazen Head is the definition of a hidden gem in San Francisco. Open late into the night, it’s a favorite for those who crave a warm, inviting spot after hours. The bar is always buzzing, filled with a lively mix of regulars and out-of-towners, making it a perfect place to strike up a conversation or simply soak in the local color. My go-to order is their Prime Rib—tender, juicy, and perfectly paired with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. I always mix up a little horseradish and sour cream on the side for that extra kick, and nothing washes it down better than a dirty vodka martini from their well-stocked bar. Now run by the owner's daughters, the staff truly feels like family, greeting you with genuine warmth and keeping the cozy, retro spirit alive. The wood-paneled, dimly lit space is as inviting as it gets, ideal for a date night or a late catch-up with friends. Brazen Head doesn’t take reservations, so plan for a wait during peak hours—but trust me, it’s worth it. Don’t skip dessert, either: their bread pudding or the pie of the day à la mode are classic comfort treats, served late so you can linger over your meal. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Brazen Head offers a slice of old-school San Francisco hospitality that’s increasingly rare—and always memorable.
Stay Here: Ocean View Club, Harbour Island
Ocean View Club: The Quintessence of Harbour Island’s Barefoot Glamour. Harbour Island, a slender slip of land off the coast of Eleuthera, has long been the Bahamian address for those who appreciate understated luxury and old-school glamour. Its three miles of iconic pink sand beach—soft, cool, and impossibly photogenic—are the stuff of legend, drawing a discerning crowd that includes everyone from fashion icons to A-list celebrities seeking privacy and authenticity over spectacle.
At the heart of this rarefied yet relaxed scene is the Ocean View Club, a property that feels more like a family beach house than a conventional hotel. Perched at the edge of Pink Sands Beach, Ocean View Club is a study in laid-back elegance: a collection of beach shacks, tented cottages, and thoughtfully composed rooms, each with its own character and an unpretentious charm that speaks to decades of hospitality shaped by the same family. The club’s restaurant, shaded by tents and overlooking the Atlantic, sources ingredients from local farmers and fishermen, offering a menu that is simple, fresh, and distinctly Bahamian.
The island itself is as intimate as it is glamorous. Harbour Island is just over three miles long and half a mile wide, making it wonderfully walkable. Most visitors and locals alike get around by golf cart, a detail that’s become part of the island’s DNA. It’s not uncommon to spot a global celebrity or design-world luminary zipping through Dunmore Town’s narrow, bougainvillea-lined streets in a golf cart, blending in with the relaxed rhythm of daily life. There are no limousines here—just the gentle hum of electric carts and the easy camaraderie of a place where everyone is, for a time, a local.
The social scene is both vibrant and discreet. The Rock House’s Gumbay Smash—a potent, tropical concoction—has become a rite of passage for visitors, best enjoyed as the sun sets over the harbour. The club’s honor bar and communal terraces invite spontaneous conversation, while nights often end with barefoot walks along the moonlit beach or a late-night dessert under the stars.
Harbour Island’s famed pink sand is more than a visual marvel; it’s a natural phenomenon. The blush hue is created by microscopic foraminifera—coral insects with bright red shells—that mix with the white sand as they wash ashore. The result is a shoreline that glows with a subtle, rosy light, especially where the waves meet the sand, and remains cool underfoot even at midday.
This unique blend of natural beauty and cultivated hospitality has made Harbour Island a magnet for the world’s most discerning travelers. Regulars include designers, artists, and celebrities—India Hicks, George Clooney, Mick Jagger, The Hornberger Family and Jennifer Aniston among them—who return year after year for the island’s privacy, charm, and sense of community. Yet, despite its illustrious guest list, Harbour Island resists pretense. The Ocean View Club, with its storied past and welcoming spirit, embodies this ethos: a place where glamour is measured in moments, not appearances, and where the magic of the island is always just a barefoot step away.

Stylist Spotlight: Daniel Karvasales
This is possibly the easiest spotlight I will ever write. Daniel is not only an amazingly talented Hairdresser, Artist, Ceramicist, Father, Partner -but he’s also my big brother and best friend.
I often say if I was as talented as a hairdresser as him, I would probably be charging $600 per haircut and booked out a year in advance. Because Daniel doesn’t have an over-inflated ego like me, he’s still in very high-demand, but he’s still bookable if you can plan a few weeks out - and at around $135 or so for a ladies cut, he’s probably the best value you will ever find in a hairdresser with his skillset.
For all you Marin readers, you’re in luck, because starting in June, Daniel will be cutting hair once a week at our San Rafael studio. Book now and you’ll never regret it!
Did I mention he’s also the co-founder of Hickory Clay, the most stunning ceramic studio in San Francisco? More about that below…

Introducing THE POWDER by David James.
I’m thrilled to finally share something I’ve been working on for a long time—THE POWDER. After more than two decades behind the chair and over 100,000 haircuts, I wanted to create a product that truly delivers what my clients have always asked for: effortless volume, natural texture, and a clean, touchable finish.
THE POWDER is my answer. I designed it for anyone who wants to give their hair a little extra lift and texture without any stickiness or heavy buildup. Whether you’re looking to boost volume at the roots, add some separation, or just give your style a bit more edge, this product is for you. It’s lightweight, super easy to use, and works on all hair types. Just sprinkle a little at your roots or wherever you want some extra oomph, work it in with your fingers, and you’ll see instant results.
What makes THE POWDER special is that it’s born from real salon experience— and tested on real clients with real hair goals. I wanted something that would perform in the salon and at home, so you can get that pro look every day.
I’m genuinely excited for you to try THE POWDER and see the difference for yourself. You can find it now in the DAVID JAMES Curated Collection for just $24. Thank you for trusting me with your hair all these years—I can’t wait for you to experience this new addition!

Song of The Month: Rudimental: Live My Life
“Let Me Live” by Rudimental feat. Major Lazer, Anne-Marie and Mr. Eazi is shaped by a vibrant fusion of musical influences, resulting in a dynamic and uplifting feel. The track brings together drum and bass from the legendary British group, Rudimental, Jamaican-inspired dancehall and reggae elements courtesy of Major Lazer, and the laidback, summery vocal styles of Anne-Marie and Nigerian artist Mr Eazi. The result is a song that constantly shifts in pace and mood, capturing a carefree, empowering spirit that encourages listeners to embrace their individuality. The diverse backgrounds of the collaborators infuse the song with global energy, making it feel fresh, unpredictable, and perfect for summer playlists. It’s also an absolute banger when you’re working out and trying to get those last few reps in, or finishing up that all out sprint at the end of your run.
